How we’re showcasing sustainable stays on our platform
As part of our mission to make it easier for everyone to experience the world, we believe it’s our responsibility to make sustainable choices easier, both for our properties and our customers. This is why we’ve been investing in our Travel Sustainable programme – an inclusive framework designed to recognise and support all our properties on their sustainability journey.
The Travel Sustainable badge
To help showcase the impactful efforts our properties are taking on their journeys to create more sustainable experiences, we’ve launched the Travel Sustainable badge to symbolise our properties’ commitment to sustainability. The Travel Sustainable badge is a credible, globally relevant sustainability measure that will provide travellers with a transparent, consistent and easy-to-understand way to identify sustainable properties.
During this first phase of launch, the Travel Sustainable badge and an overview of individual property sustainability efforts will initially be visible to travellers on property pages across our app and website globally. As the rollout continues, the Travel Sustainable badge will also start to appear on property listing on the search results page, along with Travel Sustainable filters.
Displaying the sustainable practices your properties are taking is especially important when you consider that 81% of global travellers state they want to stay in a sustainable accommodation in the upcoming year. With 73% of travellers indicating that they would be more likely to choose a specific accommodation if they knew it was implementing sustainable practices, the Travel Sustainable badge plays an important role in customers’ decision making process.
How can I highlight my properties’ sustainability practices?
The badge is available to any kind of property that has implemented a combination of sustainable practices that meet the requisite impact threshold for their destination. The practices cover five key areas: waste, energy and greenhouse gases, water, supporting local communities and protecting nature, and are broken down into 32 specific sustainability practices that properties can implement, including everything from eliminating single-use plastic toiletries and switching to LED light fixtures, to running on 100% renewable energy.
To see if they are eligible for the badge, your properties can inform us of the sustainability practices their property adopts. You can make these practices directly available to your properties in your interface via the Content API. If you haven’t implemented the API, your properties can indicate their practices in the 'Facilities and Services' section of the extranet. Once they’ve done this, we’ll assess if their property is eligible to receive the badge based on an inclusive criteria model and localisation needs, resulting in their overall impact score.
To help your properties discover sustainability guidance, insights and best practices, there are various educational resources you can share with them, including our Travel Sustainable Handbook and dedicated content on the Booking.com Partner Hub.
